Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church

A Tour of Our Campus and Facilities

Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church is blessed with a wonderful location and facilities.  The church is sited on a nine-acre campus bordered by Mt. Vernon Highway and Johnson Ferry Road in Sandy Springs, a northern suburb of Atlanta (Map and Directions).  While the immediate neighborhood is comprised of single-family homes , a commercial district, office buildings, and apartments are not far away.  We are about one mile outside I-285, the perimeter road around Atlanta.

Activities Building

There are five brick buildings on campus totaling 92,000 square feet.  The oldest (Education Building) dates from 1958.  The newest addition was in built in 2001.  The sanctuary was constructed in 1968 and is a Peter Waggoner design.

The church shares the campus with the Lower School of the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School and is a busy, well-used space seven days a week. (Facilities Map)

Sanctuary

The Sanctuary building includes a modern worship space with traditional elements that seats about 800 people.  Art forms and Christian Symbolism can be found throughout the building and campus.  A 43 rank Austin pipe organ and baby grand piano provide wonderful music to enrich our worship. See "The Pipe Organ at Mount Vernon" (10MB PDF).

Narthex

The Narthex provides a welcome area and a place for fellowship. A display sets the theme of worship for each Sunday.  A welcome table has information about the church and gifts for first-time visitors.  Groups sometime have sign-up tables in the narthex.

Session Room

The administrative wing houses offices for the church staff.  The session room  accommodates many study groups and committees, as well as the session for its called (shorter) meetings.Chapel

In the north wing we have a Chapel which can seat about thirty people for small weddings and funerals.  This versatile space is also used by groups for classes and meetings.  There is a music room where the choir practices as well as robing rooms for men and women.

NurseryWe have attractive and colorful children's Sunday School rooms.  "The Mushroom" is a room that houses all the arts and craft supplies used in ministry with children.  We have a nursery with bright windows.  We also have a toddler room with many toys and an adjoining bathroom with toddler-sized facilities.

Kirk Center

On the lower level of the sanctuary building (accessible by elevator) is the Kirk Center, a multi-purpose room with an adjoining kitchen.

Fellowship Hall

Our Fellowship Hall  is a flexible space that we use for many events including contemporary worship, congregational meals, and intergenerational activities.  The hall may be subdivided into smaller rooms. There is a spacious, well-equipped, commercial kitchen.

Gymnasium

The Activities Building has a gymnasium which features a basketball court with bleachers.  Most of the adult Sunday school classes meet in the classrooms in this building, which contains the campus's other elevator.

Gailey Hall

Gailey Hall has served many uses over the years. It was built by the men of the church originally as a Scout Hut.  Then it was the home of the Community Action Center  from 1987-2005.  Its rustic interior provides a cozy space for youth and other gatherings.

The Education Building is a classroom building not currently used by the church.

Patio

The church grounds are wonderful for a variety of activities. Three of our five buildings face a grass courtyard, and there is a patio between the Fellowship Hall and the Activities Building.

Playground

We have three large, well-equipped playgrounds.  There is also a playing field and ample parking space which are used for many of our activities.
