Rev. Joseph B. Martin IV

The Reverend Joseph Bacon Martin IV joined Mount. Vernon Presbyterian Church on January 1st, 2009. Previously Rev. Martin (“Joe B.”) served as the Pastor and Head of Staff at Northside Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Joe B. is a native of North Carolina and graduated from Davidson College in 1989. He enrolled at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia where he graduated in 1995. After ordination, Joe B. served as an associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Knoxville. He is now a candidate for his Doctorate in Ministry at Union Seminary. His wife, Jodi, is from Michigan, where she graduated from Hope College before she attended PSCE and met Joe B. She is also an ordained Presbyterian minister (Columbia Seminary ‘02) and served with Joe B. as associate pastor at Northside Church. They have two sons. Joseph is 15 years old and Benjamin is 13.

The Rev. Ronald J. Gilreath
Associate Pastor / Adult Education, Pastoral Care

Ron and his wife Melisha are the parents of two adult daughters, Bethany and Kathleen. A native of Fayetteville, NC, he is a graduate of Methodist College (BA), the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (MA), and Columbia Theological Seminary (MDiv), and has done postgraduate study in the areas of Christian spirituality and older adult ministry. Ron serves the larger church as a member of the Senior Adult Ministry Committee of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, as a member of the Planning Team for the 2007 Montreat Life Long Living Conference; and as chair of the Planning Team for the 2008 Montreat Life Long Living Conference. He came to Mount. Vernon in 1998 from First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, NC where he was Associate Pastor. In his leisure time Ron enjoys traveling, reading and chasing that little white ball (otherwise known as golf) |

Elizabeth Small
Director of Ministry to Youth and Their Families

Elizabeth came to Mount Vernon in 1998 after nine years of serving as Director of Youth Ministries at Faith Presbyterian Church, as well as Area Director of Young Life, in Seminole, Florida. She has a degree in English from Vanderbilt University, as well as a Master's Degree in Theology with an Emphasis on Youth Ministry from Fuller Seminary. Elizabeth was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. Special interests include theatre, music, movies, tennis, football, and caring for her cats, Emma and Sam. |

Wendy Evans
Director of Ministry to Children and Their Families

Wendy has worked with the children of Mount Vernon since the fall of 2010. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of William and Mary and a master’s degree in counseling from Rider University. She has worked with children for the past 25 years in a variety of positions including public school teacher, mental health counselor, church youth director and program coordinator. She has lived in many places throughout the country including Texas, Virginia, Idaho, Arkansas, and New York. Wendy and her husband, Tom, have a son, Matt, 11-years-old, and a daughter, Liz, who attends Kennesaw State University. Wendy enjoys cooking with her family, getting a great manicure, and Brewster’s Birthday Cake ice cream.

James M. Wingate
Minister of Music / Organist

An organist for more than 40 years, Jim has been involved in music administration, choral and orchestral conducting and arranging, teaching, and working as a recording engineer, record producer and studio musician. Prior to coming to Mount Vernon, he served as Minister of Music at three different Baptist and Presbyterian churches in New York City. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Master of Sacred Music degree from Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. Jim has four children and seven grandchildren. Hobbies include amateur radio, computing, camping, and installing a Moller pipe organ in his home. He also serves as Director of Educational Technology for the Lovett School in Atlanta.

Kathy Clark
Handbell Director/Associate Organist

Kathy has served churches as organist/choir director, handbell director, and children’s choir director for over 20 years. In addition to serving as Mount Vernon’s adult hand bell director, she is employed at River Eves Elementary School in Roswell. She directs the chorus and teaches general music classes to the students there. Kathy was selected 2007 Teacher of the Year for River Eves School and 2008 Teacher of the Year for Around Roswell magazine. She holds bachelor and master of science degrees in music education from the University of Arkansas. Hobbies include interior design, travel, gardening, and visitations to retirement homes with her cocker spaniel, Misty, as part of the international pet therapy group, Delta Society.

T. J. Shirley
First Cup Worship Leader and Children's Music Director

TJ was born and raised in Plant City, Florida. He has served in various capacities in churches, including music ministry, youth ministry, and children’s ministry. TJ has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Southeastern University and a Master’s of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. He has known his wife, Maggie, since middle school. She teaches elementary music in DeKalb County. TJ enjoys playing his trumpet, reading, football, and movies.

Don Paul

Don was born in Selma, Alabama and grew up in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Okinawa, Colorado, and Texas as the son of an Air Force Colonel. He received his BCE degree from Georgia Tech and his Master’s in Industrial Administration from Purdue University. Don worked for Brown and Root, Accenture, Georgia Pacific, and The Home Depot prior to joining MVPC in 2003. Don’s hobbies include all sports, with special interest in softball and golf. Don and his wife Rixey have 2 children, a daughter, Olivia, and a son, Jeremy, and have been members of Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church since 1994.

Beverly Mitchell

Beverly Mitchell is a native New Orleanian. She graduated from Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi with a BS in accounting. Before coming to MVPC, she worked in accounting for several companies including Hibernia National Bank, Trumpet Advertising, and Aspen Marketing Services. Beverly and her husband Herman have two sons, Kaleb and Jared, and a daughter, LaSha. In her leisure time she enjoys traveling, baking, movies, football, and, most of all, spending time with her family. |

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Symone is a graduate of University of Phoenix with an AA in business and recently graduated with a BS in psychology. Before coming to Mount Vernon she worked in the administrative, human resource, and accounting fields for companies such as Target and Bellsouth. Symone has two children Kevin and Nya. In her leisure time she likes to spend time with family, read, travel, watch HGTV, and cook. |

Jill Thompson

Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Jill was raised in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Atlanta in 1966. She attended West Georgia College and The University of Georgia majoring in Primatology. Before coming to MVPC, she worked as an administrative assistant for an architectural firm and as office manager for an imprintable design stationary company. Jill has two sons, Matthew and Alex, who currently reside in Maui, HI and a beloved and very loyal German Shepherd, Xena. In her leisure time, she enjoys hiking, movies, reading, and music. |
