The House of Martha is located in Kanyama Compound, a high-density, poverty stricken area of Lusaka, Zambia. The Crisis Nursery is a "safe home" for children aged 4 - 8 who are orphaned, abandoned, lost or whose families are in severe crisis. It is structured as a typical home and family in the community. In this loving home orphans, abandoned children and other children in crisis, find refuge and a safe place for the healing process to begin.
This temporary home is not an orphanage, but rather exists to re-unite children with a family. Because the Zambian extended family ethic continues to be strong, we are experiencing success in reincorporating our children into the community. Children who do not have extended family are placed into adoptive, foster or community group homes. House of Martha will be moving to a new, larger facility in the near future as funds are raised.
The Dr. Terry Wood Memorial Classroom was established as a special education program for the children at House of Martha. Dr. Wood was a faithful friend and supporter of Alliance for Children Everywhere for more than 20 years. The classroom was opened in September 2006. It has greatly contributed to the healing and development of the children of various ages and from different backgrounds.
