How To Join
We are glad to welcome new members into our community of faith. Most people opt to participate in our Inquirers' Class before becoming members, though it is not a requirement. In this class you can meet other newcomers and learn about our church. Please see Inquirers below . We welcome new members via one of the following three ways:
1. Baptism and Profession of Faith: If you have never belonged to a church before and have never been baptized, you would receive this sacrament during morning worship. You would, at that same time, profess your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and your desire to follow him as a member of this congregation.
2. Reaffirmation of Faith: If you have been baptized and once belonged to a church, but have been inactive for some time, you would reaffirm your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and promise to be a faithful member of this congregation.
3. Transfer of Letter: If you are on the active roll of another congregation, we would arrange for the transfer of your letter. If your former church does not practice this (some denominations or congregations do not, e.g. Roman Catholic and some Baptists), it would be appropriate to join by a reaffirmation of faith.
In all cases, persons wishing to join a Presbyterian church meet with the Session (governing board) to be received. During a Sunday worship service, new members are introduced and make their promises before the congregation.
Inquirers' Fellowship
Inquirers' Fellowship is an orientation for those considering membership at Mt. Vernon. As the name implies, it is intended to be an informative, warm, no-pressure introduction to the church. Though attendance is definitely not a prerequisite for joining Mt. Vernon, it is encouraged as a way of meeting other newcomers and learning about the church. Most people (even those already Presbyterian) find it helpful. Topics covered include Presbyterianism, Mt. Vernon's mission and ministry, and getting involved. The class is led by the pastors and lay hosts. Child care is available.
We offer two different formats of Inquirers:
INQ AM meets on three consecutive Sunday mornings from 10:00-10:45 AM during our Sunday School hour.
INQ PM meets for one Sunday afternoon from noon to 3:00 PM. The same material covered in INQ AM is covered in INQ PM. However, those desiring to join will meet with the Session on a subsequent Sunday morning. Child care is available for INQ PM but requires a reservation.
For dates and enrollment, please call 404-255-2211 (x214) or email joeb@mvpchurch.org to find out when the next Inquirers' class is scheduled. We'd love to have you join us!
